CHARACTER NAME: Touka Kirishima (AKA “Rabbit”)
CHARACTER AGE: 18
SERIES: Tokyo Ghoul
CHRONOLOGY: Chapter 121 (Not too long after beating the crap out of Kaneki)
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: De Chima, please!
BACKGROUND:
Touka’s Background
Touka’s role in canon has a lot to do with her role as a ghoul in the setting. While ghouls generally look and act exactly like humans, there are a few major differences…the biggest one being that ghouls must eat human flesh in order to survive. Even if a ghoul wished to avoid doing so, they are unable to digest any other type of food. As a result of their dietary needs, humans view ghouls as little more than monsters – going so far as to establish a special division of hunters (The CCG) that track down and kill ghouls. Because of this danger, many ghouls either attempt to cut themselves off from human society entirely, or seek to fit in among them (although the risk of detection becomes much greater).
As a child, Touka grew up with a father who encouraged her and her brother to make an effort to coexist alongside humans while keeping their identities hidden. They were friendly towards their human neighbors, and even partook in meals offered to them out of politeness (and to avoid suspicion). This lifestyle wouldn’t last though, as her father disappeared one day when she was still very young.
Touka would eventually find refuge in Anteiku – a café run by ghouls, where she would take on the job of a waitress by day. While the café serves both ghoul and human customers, its primary purpose is to provide aid to ghouls in need. One of the major ways they help is by obtaining food for ghouls unable to hunt for themselves. Not only that, but their source of food is always from the bodies of suicide victims, since the ghouls of Anteiku don’t want hunt humans if it’s not necessary.
As an employee of this establishment, Touka offers an important perspective on ghoul society. Playing a major role in the story, she’s able to give the main character, Kaneki (a human turned into a half ghoul), new insight into the ghoul world that he originally paid little attention to. She’s also able to help him begin to learn more about his new body – helping to teach him how to fight and how to fit in at the café.
PERSONALITY:
Others have described Touka as a “hard-worker” which is certainly true given that she has a school life and a job at Anteiku. Both of these result in a lot of exposure and interaction with humans, so it’s a pretty risky way of living for a ghoul. But she puts in a lot of effort to maintain this peaceful lifestyle that she’s built, especially after spending so much of her childhood on the run from CCG operatives.
She’s become adept at mingling with humans and mimicking their behavior – putting on a more pleasant demeanor when she’s working as a waitress. Most human characters never even suspect that she’s a ghoul. Basically, she can usually force a smile if she has to.
But this demeanor can be dropped in an instant when she doesn’t have to keep up appearances. For one thing, she’s got a pretty short temper. She didn’t bother to hide her disdain when the manager of the shop agreed to lend Kaneki (the half ghoul) assistance, and she proceeded to treat him rather poorly for quite a while. Anytime she was asked to personally help him out, she would act like it was a nuisance.
She can be pretty ruthless too. When Kaneki came to her, asking for help with learning how to fight and get stronger…she agreed to it, but didn’t hold anything back when training him. Her method of “training” was basically to have them fight one-on-one. She told Kaneki to fight her as if his life depended on it – even going so far as to break one of his fingers to show that she was serious. Though this probably seemed harsh, this was how Touka claimed she grew stronger, so it seemed to be the easiest way to teach someone else.
And did I mention she's stubborn? If there’s one thing she’s really unreasonable about, it’s dealing with CCG investigators. This is probably due to the CCG tearing her family apart when she was younger…but Touka becomes angered about them to the point of being irrational. Even when given a strict warning that attacking investigators will only draw more attention, Touka still disregarded it. She quickly took matters into her own hands – rashly attacking several investigators as an act of revenge for a fellow ghoul.
So, yeah. Pretty reckless, ruthless, short-tempered, stubborn…But even with some of the harsher aspects of her personality, Touka has shown multiple times that she’s a very caring and devoted individual. It’s easier to see this side of her when looking at her relationship with other characters.
One good example of this behavior is seen in her relationship with Hinami, a young ghoul who’s a regular customer at Anteiku. Touka noticeably brightens up upon seeing her – often smiling and speaking more easily. And it’s through Hinami that we can see a much more protective side of Touka.
The CCG operatives that Touka attacked were actually the same ones who killed Hinami’s mother. It becomes clear that this is not simply an act of revenge…but something done out of concern for Hinami. The investigators who killed Hinami’s mother also identified her as a ghoul, so Touka believed that eliminating them was the only way to ensure her friend’s safety.
But it’s not only ghouls that Touka’s developed meaningful relationships with. Her closest human friend, Yoriko, often makes her home-cooked meals or shares food with her. Even in situations where Touka could simply throw out the food to avoid getting sick, she always eats the entire meal because her friend went through the trouble of making it. She values this gesture enough to ignore the ill-effects on her own health, which shows just how appreciative she can be.
She even warms up to Kaneki after spending more time with him and witnessing his kindness first hand. Her concern for him noticeably grows, eventually coming to care about him enough to risk her life on several occasions to help him.
Touka places such a high value on her friends after spending so much time alone early in her life. Her mother and father both died when she was rather young, and her brother eventually left her behind…so naturally, she’s had to fend for herself a lot. This has made her somewhat reserved in talking about herself, but it’s also made her pretty independent. She’s lived by herself for a long time, after all.
As the canon progressed, Touka became less and less “cold” – starting to appear as more thoughtful and quiet. At one point she even mentions that she’d like to become a teacher since she likes school, but she’d be worried about her short temper. So it shows that she’s capable of change and accepting her own faults. And this is the canon point I'm taking her from, where she's already begun to change and make a greater attempt to listen to others.
POWER:
Ghoul (Canon Power)
Being a ghoul, Touka’s body has much greater strength and endurance than that of a human’s. It’s possible for ghouls to injure a human with minimal effort. Average weapons, knives for example, are unable to penetrate a ghoul’s body, and will break upon impact. While it’s not impossible to injure a ghoul, it would take something with much greater force to do so.
They possess other abilities such as an enhanced sense of smell and regenerative abilities – even some of their more major injuries can be healed within a few days.
Despite their capabilities, ghouls still have limits. First off, the membranes on a ghoul’s body (such as the eyes) are a weak point which can be injured much more easily. Their power is also largely dependent on their diet - a ghoul who is starving will start to lose their self-control around humans, and be unable to use their kagune or their regenerative abilities.
Ghouls are unable to digest anything aside from human flesh – coffee being the only known exception. The only other option would be to resort to cannibalism on other ghouls, although it has been shown to drive many of them to madness.
By consuming human flesh, ghouls also ingest the “RC cells” in a human’s body, which is the source of their “kagune”. The stored RC cells can be stored in an organ inside the body, and a ghoul can “release” it by having it pierce through the skin whenever they chose. The kagune is the form that manifests upon release.
There are different shapes and types of kagune, largely depending on their location in the body. Touka’s takes the form of a single black wing sprouting from her shoulder, making it an Ukaku type.
Ukaku users are great at striking fast and hard – boasting superior agility and the ability to throw projectiles from their kagune. Touka has also been shown to use her kagune as a both a shield, and a means of enhancing her punches. However, Ukaku users have a shorter supply of RC cells, and their strength will diminish if a fight drags on for too long.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE: Video
[After a few short (and loud) jolts of static, the video feed shows an image of a girl with long dark hair – her right eye completely covered by it. She’s still fidgeting with the controls…and starting to get noticeably irritated as she tries to get everything set up.
After another moment, she finally pulls her hands away and sets them in her lap. It looks like the damn thing’s recording, but she can’t really tell.]
So…[A bit of an awkaward pause. Cut her some slack, she’s never done anything like this before. How do people usually start these videos off? Might as well just get to the point.
She clears her throat.]
You can probably guess, but I’m kinda new here. Figured I’d check in…see if there’s anyone else I know that’s around.
[She’d really rather not be the only ghoul here. But since there's a good chance she is...maybe it'd be a good idea to ask for some more info on the area. The camera's already rolling, so why not?]
And since I’m sending this out anyway. I was hoping someone could recommend a good coffee shop to me? Maybe one that’s a little quieter. You know, out of the way. [Basically the less people, the better. But she keeps that part to herself.]
LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE:
’Don’t worry. We’re the good guys.’
Yeah, right. Do they really expect her to just take their word for it? After taking her away from the life she’d worked so hard to keep? Things had been peaceful…school was going well. She’d…hell, she’d been studying for exams and thinking about becoming a teacher. How was she supposed to do that now? It was like starting all over…again.
Touka had stormed out onto the streets later that evening – hoping some fresh air might cool her head a little. She’s not paying much attention to where she’s going…probably not the best idea since she has no idea where anything is…but she can’t bring herself to care all that much.
The biggest thing she’d have to worry about is food. Because nothing can ever be simple when you’re a ghoul. She sure as hell didn’t want to take bodies from some shady-ass government cronies…But who knows how long it’d take to find a food source by herself? If she started reaching dangerous levels of hunger, she’d be on her own…And that’s not something she wants to deal with.
“We found a way to get food back in the 20th ward. There’ll be something I can do here, too.” She mumbles the words out loud in quiet reassurance.
FINAL NOTES: For inventory, I’d like her to have her “Rabbit Mask” that she uses to hide her identity when fighting, and a small rabbit keychain that she received as a gift from Kaneki (both of these are things that she’d keep on-hand anyway).
